In this article, we will take a look at the simple and safe way to repair Office 365 instance on a Windows 10 computer without a full suite reinstall. Office 365 repair procedure is usually used if you are facing issues in Word, Excel, OneNote, or other Office 365 apps.
In order to fix most common Office 365 issues, it is recommended to use the official Office 365 Troubleshooting Tool (Office Support and Recovery Assistant). You can download it here. Before performing Office 365 repair, we recommend you to run this tool and check if it can fix your problems with Office 365.
If the Support and Recovery Assistant tool didn’t help you to fix the errors, you can quickly reset Office 365 installation on Windows 10 using the Repair mode.
Before using this mode, it is recommended to install the latest Windows security updates and temporarily remove (disable) third-party antivirus and firewall apps (except for Windows Defender).
Then open the Settings app and go to Apps > Apps & features.
Find Microsoft Office 365 in the list of installed programs, click on it and press the Modify button.
Two options will be available in the next dialog box:
- Quick Repair – this repair option doesn’t require internet connection (local Office 365 distro cache is used);
- Online Repair – when using this option, the Click-to-run installer downloads the latest version of Office 365 from the Microsoft Office CDN network and performs a full reinstall. After completing this process, you will have to reactivate your Office copy.
Usually, you should try the Quick Repair first, and if your problem is not fixed, use the Online Repair option.
After completing Online Repair, you will see a message about the successful installation of Office 365.
Hint. We remind you that when purchasing Office 365 subscription, the user always uses the latest Office version (unlike classical Office versions such as Office 2016, 2019, etc.).
You can start Office 365 repair from the elevated command prompt. To do this, use the OfficeClickToRun.exe file. By default, it is saved to the Common Data directory.
To run Office 365 x86 Quick Repair, use the command:
“C:\Program Files\Common Documents\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe” scenario=Repair platform=x86 culture=en-us RepairType=QuickRepair DisplayLevel=False
Run a full recovery for Office 365 x64 with all the information displayed:
“C:\Program Data files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe” scenario=Repair system=x64 culture=en-us RepairType=FullRepair DisplayLevel=True
Run Office 365 app and in the window that appears, specify your email address that you used to purchase Office subscription. Activate your copy of Office 365 (if you have a product key, click on the appropriate link and enter your key).
Make sure that your problem with the Office application is fixed.
Do not forget to install (enable) third-party antivirus software if you disabled it earlier.
